Volvo Cars to build EX30 small SUV in Ghent as part of global production capacity boost
In response to the soaring demand for our cars, Volvo Cars has exciting news to share. We’ve made the strategic decision to commence production of the highly anticipated, fully electric Volvo EX30 at our state-of-the-art Ghent plant in Belgium, starting from 2025. This move is a significant step towards expanding our production capacity, particularly for our beloved small SUV.
The EX30 has taken the automotive world by storm, receiving widespread acclaim and accolades, such as The Sun Car of the Year and the Small SUV/Crossover of the Year award from the Sunday Times, since its unveiling earlier this year.
While the production of the EX30 began in Zhangjiakou, China, earlier this fall, with the first cars set to reach eager customers later this year, our decision to also manufacture the EX30 in Ghent is aimed at meeting the rising demand for this remarkable electric SUV in Europe and for worldwide export. It aligns perfectly with Volvo Cars’ commitment to producing cars where we sell them, a principle we’ve successfully employed with our top-selling XC60 and XC40 SUVs, produced in both Europe and China.
Is it Volvo Cars ambition, new EX30 concept
Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars’ CEO, explained our vision: “Our ambition is to make the EX30 accessible to people around the world at an attractive price point, making the transition to driving an electric Volvo car more seamless while boosting our company’s margins. Adding production in Ghent is a strategic move, enabling us to cater to the growing demand for our captivating small electric SUV on a global scale.”
At Volvo Cars, we’ve set ambitious goals for electrification and plan to exclusively offer fully electric cars by 2030. By the middle of this decade, we aim for half of our global sales volume to be comprised of fully electric cars. The EX30 plays a pivotal role in realizing these aspirations, as we anticipate it will significantly contribute to our growth and profitability targets, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of our ongoing strategic transformation.
The EX30 will join the ranks of the XC40 and C40 models on the production line in Ghent, becoming the third fully electric Volvo model to be manufactured in Europe. This development further enhances our electric car production capabilities in the region, highlighting the pivotal role played by the Ghent plant in our electrification strategy.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates and innovations from Volvo. We are committed to leading the charge in the electric vehicle revolution and bringing you exceptional cars that epitomize safety, sustainability, and Scandinavian design.
