Uber driver stole $250,000 Ferrari California

A man whose listed occupation is listed as an Uber driver — 26-year old Hilburn Jay Brendon Hunkins of Kissimmee, Florida — was driving a black 2017 Ferrari California on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Florida, Thursday morning, when he drew the attention of a Gainesville Police officer who was part of a drug enforcement task force.

According to the police report, Hunkins was driving slowly next to a Chevrolet Corvette which grabbed the attention of officer David Rodriguez. The officer used his license tag reader and determined that the Ferrari had been stolen from West Palm Beach.

After his arrest Hunkins told the officer the Ferrari belonged to a friend, but could not provide details. A published report on WFTV CVhannel 9’s website said that suspect also attempted to erase his cellphone.

Hunkins was charged with grand theft auto

The Gainesville Police Department posted a humorous Facebook post with pictures of the Ferrari valued at $250,000, complete with dealer’s stickers still on the windows, saying in part that the listed 18 miles per gallon was incorrect.

“We were able to get 10 mpg out of it when we drove it to the station.”  The department added they were joking: “We had it safely towed for the rightful owner.
