Only on race tracks: Nissan creates Leaf Nismo RC racer

Nissan has unveiled a new Leaf Nismo RC.  Its all-electric race car -with more than double the power and torque of its predecessor.

Featuring two electric motors – one on each axle – for all-wheel drive, the Leaf Nismo RC is kitted out with advanced battery and drivetrain components.

The motors produce 240 kW combined, and 640 Nm of torque, though the battery capacity is described only as ‘high capacity.

A new body dramatically changes the look of the Leaf with a different focus on aerodynamics. Performance times come in at a 0-62mph sprint completed in just 3.4 seconds, 50% quicker than the old version.

Six of the new Leaf Nismo RC models will be built and sent around the world as a showcase for what can be done with EV technology. They will go on display at Formula E races and other major events from next month.

Nissan’s developments in motorsport are set to filter down to its road cars, with the company’s involvement in Formula E from the coming season an example of this commitment.

Although he Leaf Nismo RC is only for the track, Nissan has confirmed that a longer-range, more powerful version of the Leaf is coming along in the near future.
