Mercedes new AMG GT is only $112,125

Mercedes-Benz has announced that the entry-level price for its new Porsche 911-rivalling AMG GT will sticker for $112,125, a hefty premium over the 911 S, which originates just across town in Stuttgart, Germany.

By comparison, the 911 S stickers for $104,450, though direct comparisons aren’t that easy to make between the two.

While the AMG GT has the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 as the carried-over AMG GT S, the base model has been detuned to 456 (versus 503) horsepower and 443 (versus 479) pound-feet of torque. A 7-speed dual-clutch AMG SpeedShift gearbox also comes standard, but the base GT does without the GT S model’s AMG Adaptive suspension, AMG Adaptive exhaust, and “Race” mode for its Dynamic Select system.

2016-mercedes-benz-amg-gt_100489951_mThe GT checks in at 3,560 pounds, or 67 pounds lighter than the GT S, but the weight savings made possible by the lower specification level doesn’t offset the reduction in power. Mercedes quotes the GT at a still impressive 3.9 seconds in the 0 to 60 mph sprint, versus 3.7 seconds for the GT S.

Mercedes new AMG GT and GT S

Of course, both the GT and the GT S pale in comparison to the fire-breathing AMG GT R that just debuted.

Additionally, the base model skips the leather trim and Burmester audio system in favor of highly-bolstered seats swathed in a combination of Mercedes’ MB Tex vinyl and synthetic suede as well as a non-branded stereo. Some of these features can be added to the GT, which will push its price up closer to the $132,125 GT S.

Both the GT and the GT S are now available with a new AMG Aerodynamics Package that adds a fixed rear spoiler among other goodies designed to keep the rear-wheel drive coupe planted on the road.

Look for the AMG GT to hit dealerships by the end of the summer.
