Mercedes-Benz Wallbox changes the game on home chargers
The charger is a crucial supplementary product for its electrified range.
With Mercedes-Benz investing heavily into its EV future via the EQ sub-brand using cars such as the EQS to lead the charge, it was only a matter of time until it released its very own Wallbox charger as a unique accessory. The brand says that its new piece of equipment benefits from both intelligence and connectivity, making it an ideal product to have if you own one of its electrified cars. The Mercedes-Benz Wallbox’s claim to fame and convenience is the fact that it has an internet connection, not too unlike the current options supplied by competing manufacturers. Using this, owners can monitor charge status via the Mercedes Me smartphone app wherever they are, so long as they have a stable internet connection.
To ensure that you don’t spend more money than you want to, the app also lets you cut the charge when the consumption is starting to rise above your monthly budget. For the sake of security, the Wallbox can be locked or unlocked by using the app or a supplied RFID card. Adding to the longevity and in an attempt to provide a more satisfying ownership experience, the brand will also provide the charger with over-the-air updates when needed. Mercedes-Benz has made sure that its Wallbox is in line with the brand’s current design philosophy as used on the EQ range of cars to ensure that it complements the look of the car it is charging while mounted to the garage wall. With the ability to charge up to 22 kW through a three-phase line, this unit is also much faster than using a household power socket. LED displays on the box are used as indicators for the charge progress.
The Mercedes-Benz Wallbox will be sold in the European market for €990 which is roughly $1,130. There’s no indication on when we will get to see this introduced to the US, but with the EQ strategy eyeing the region as a key market, there’s a strong chance that it will be made available as an official accessory sooner rather than later. Acknowledging the importance of the US consumer base, last year Mercedes-Benz USA provided EQS owners with two years of free charging via the Electrify America network. Only 30 minutes of the charge is complementary but this shouldn’t be an issue, considering the EQS only takes 31 minutes to be charged from 10 to 80% using a DC fast c.
