Is an ultra-luxe Audi RS Q8 coming?
The luxury SUV partt is raising right now. Something that was hard to imagine in the past. We’ve known for a while that Audi is not content with the Q7 leading its SUV lineup and that the Q8 will arrive soon to remedy the situation, but it appears that the Q8 itself may be a launching platform for something even more exclusive.
The 2017 Audi Q8 Sport concept previewed just such a vehicle earlier this year at the Geneva motor show, and Auto Express now reports that Audi Sport CEO Stephan Winkelmann indicated the automaker plans to produce this SUV. Winkelmann did not confirm outright that a vehicle badged RS Q8 had already been greenlit but suggested that a range-topping version of the Q8 will debut in the near future, according to Auto Express.
“Today we have a product lineup which we are working on, which will be expanded in more prestige segments and bodystyles sellable around the world — SUVs,” said Winkelmann
The leap from the already-confirmed Q8 to a more luxurious and performance-oriented RS Q8 isn’t a big one
What engine will power the RS Q8? According to Auto Express, it’ll be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 churning out over 600 hp and over 590 lb-ft of torque, with the RS Q8 sharing its platform with the upcoming Lamborghini Urus. The interior will feature top-shelf materials and accommodations, as one would expect, along with further performance bits to keep all those horses reined in.
If this all sounds amazingly expensive, that’s because it almost certainly will be: Auto Express expects it to be perched around the $130,000 mark, from where it will bark at other eye-wateringly expensive SUVs. And we won’t be too surprised to see Audi revisit the Q8 at least one more time this year at the Frankfurt motor show, at which point we may get more hints about the direction of the Q8 family.
