Audi could beat quattro on some RS models, says Winklemann
Stephan Winklemann, Audi’s Sport boss said at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that he believes that Audi RS models will be offering rear-wheel drive in the future. That would help the German brand take on its nationmates (ed: nationmates?) BMW and Mercedes, whose M and AMG models have a slight edge in driving dynamics thanks to their rear bias.
More facts: Audi recently switched name of its performance arm from Quattro GmbH to Audi Sport
“When looking at the name, we decided Quattro could be misleading. Quattro is the four-wheel-drive system and is one of the things that made Audi great, but in our opinion, it was not the right name for the company.” Winklemann later added, “I can imagine we can also have cars with rear-wheel drive or two-wheel drive in the future.”
Interestingly, the potential move would come as performance brands like M and AMG are adding AWD to more and more of their offerings.
Winklemann also said we’ll see two new Audi Sport models at the Frankfurt motor show later this year and eventually an electrified RS model as well.
