2022 Toyota GR86 – Pricing

Toyota’s redesigned and slightly renamed 2022 GR86 — which replaces the previous-generation 86 — adds horsepower, torque, more aggressive looks and advanced safety features to one of the few remaining affordable sports cars with rear-wheel drive on the market. And, despite all those upgrades, the 2022 GR86 with a standard six-speed manual transmission will start at $28,725 (all prices include destination). That’s just $670 more than the base 2020 model with a manual; the 86 skipped 2021.

The price disparity increases for automatic-equipped versions. With an optional six-speed automatic, the base 2022 GR86 starts at $30,225 — $1,500 more than the manual and $1,450 more than its automatic-equipped predecessor. (GR, by the way, stands for Toyota’s Gazoo Racing motorsports division.) Most of that increase can be attributed to the suite of driver-assistance and safety technologies that are standard on all automatic-equipped 2022 GR86s but missing from manual-equipped models.

Toyota is among 20 automakers that agreed in 2016 to make automatic emergency braking, a safety technology with proven crash reduction, standard by September 2022. That most likely means the 2023 model year, so it remains to be seen if and how the stick-shift GR86 will comply.

What You Get

Subaru markets a collection of safety and driver-assist technologies as EyeSight, which the GR86 — co-developed with the Subaru BRZ — will adopt. Automatic-equipped GR86’s include adaptive cruise control, forward collision detection with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist, automatic high beams and more. That likely accounts for the $1,500 price difference between the manual and automatic 2022 GR86.

Upgrade to the GR86’s Premium trim and you’ll add blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, hill start assist, and an upgraded interior with heated front seats and an eight-speaker stereo. Premium models of the GR86 cost $2,600 more than the base model.
